Biography
We here at Buffalo Parrot are AFA Certified Aviculturists, and excited Parrot enthusiasts! If we would call ourselves anything, it would be Parrot-Culturists, and Advocates for the Parrots regarding their care, conservation in the wild and the the many homeless captive Parrots that need so much help! Though we are certified Aviculturists we do not breed Parrots now or in the future. This was obtained to help us gain more knowledge. We have done much research on all aspects of Parrots and have learned a great deal. The fun part is that you will always be learning about these birds. Parrots are special, majestic birds and we would like to share our experiences with everyone, as well as hear from others' experiences with these wonderful birds. What is a Parrot? Parrots are a species of bird belonging to the order Psittaciformes. Parrots are also called "Hookbills". Our goal is to help educate on every aspect of Parrots, especially in the Buffalo, NY and Western NY area. We also wanted to share our knowledge to all the Parrot lovers out there with this fun and informative site. We here at Buffalo Parrot are also strong advocates for Parrots and what they endure both in captivity and in the wild.
Basically what we are trying to do is to always continue learning and being updated on all aspects of Parrots. This includes Health, Diet, Parrot Rescues, Wild Parrot conservation, Parrot stores, Parrot companies, Parrot abuse, Behavioral Issues, Grooming, Species, Vets, Toys, Parrot Products, Training, and even learning how breeders go about their ways. Hopefully sharing the knowledge we gain to anyone willing to learn and listen can someday, if not already make a difference. We try our best to stay neutral in order to be able to listen and learn better. The more we learn the more we can share! I hope we can all make a difference for these beloved Parrots whether they are in the wild, in a rescue, or in our home.
* Though in the past we have purchased our Parrots through Breeders and Pet Shops, we strongly recommend not doing so! The demand for Parrots is far less than the Parrots already in Bird Rescues that are in need of a good home! Breeders keep breeding baby Parrots while the number of homeless Parrots grow! After our experiences and research over the years we will only get our Parrots from Rescue Organizations in the future.
*The writings and context in this site are the opinions & experiences of the writers of Buffalo Parrot. When in doubt, always consult with an experienced Avian veterinarian, groomer, behavioral specialist, or breeder in your area.
* Buffalo Parrot is proud to say that it is affiliated with Second Chance Bird Rescue!
We are from Buffalo, NY in the Southtowns area. Our only experience with parrots previously is the head of our family, who had two Budgies (Parakeets) when he was younger. He and his wife were in a pet store a few years back when they saw a Rose Breasted Cockatoo. It was a beautiful bird that charmed the pants off of them! They were soon hooked. Before we all knew it our flock consisted of a Senegal Parrot, Kito, a Pacific Parrotlet , Tupi, two Peach Faced Lovebirds, Tarzan and Jane, a Cockatiel, Miah RIP 2/23/10, a Green Cheeked Conure, Chico, a Lineolated parakeet, Chile, a Bourke's Parakeet, Aussie, a Black Capped Conure, Julio a Budgerigar, Anni, two Indian Ring Necked Parakeets, Taj & Mahal, Scarlet Chested Parakeet, Sydney, and a Cockatiel Squiggy. Our ten year-old Miniature Pincher, Zeus, guards the flock when we're away. Well, not without COOKIES, of course. We are also proud members of the Buffalo Hookbill Association.
We would also like everyone to realize Parrots are not just pets but also live in the wild all over the world. While some Parrots are still thriving in the wild many are in trouble! They have to endure changes in their climate such as "Global Warming", habitat loss due to the timber cutting of forests, poaching, and wild Parrot pet trade, pollution and habitat loss caused by the building of the ever growing human population. If more and more of us are aware of this maybe wild Parrots will still be around for our great-grandchildren to enjoy. If you can find it in your heart, donating to a wild Parrot conservation organization would be a great help for these feathered beauties! Even if it's only a few bucks! Also, PLEASE, don't ever neglect or abuse your Parrot! If you find things overwhelming and you just can't take care of your Parrot, give it to a local Bird Rescue or Adoption Organization. The Bird Placement Program is a great place to start this process or if you want to adopt a Parrot. In Western New York (Rochester) is a great rescue/adoption, called the Second Chance Bird Rescue. Donating to these wonderful non-profit organizations is a great help. These organizations really do a wonderful job at keeping neglected, abused, and unwanted Parrots safe and healthy! You can donate toys, money, cages, food, etc.. If you would like to make a donation to Second Chance Bird Rescue, please click the Donation button! All donations will go directly to the owner of the organizations account to help Parrots stay healthy and safe! With all that said, lets have some fun and join our world of Parrot-Culture!!
